Be sure to try this sensory bin for 2 year old or toddler aged kid! If you are a coffee lover yourself, your toddler will love imitating you and creating their own coffee!
Coffee themed Sensory Bin for 2 Year Old
For this bin, feel free to replace the dried beans for coffee beans. I mean, how much better could a sensory bin smell than with coffee beans! I opted to use dried beans instead because they’re cheaper!
How to recreate this DIY sensory bin for 2 year old!
Supplies:
Dried Kidney beans and Pinto Beans
Paper coffee cups
Coffee lids
Coffee sleeves and stoppers
Straws
White & Green pom poms
White & Green Gems (These would work perfectly!)
Scoops – I used a measuring spoon and these scoops!
Steps to Create this Sensory Bin:
1 Add the beans to your bin and mix them together! (We use these Ikea Trofast bins along with our Ikea Flisat Table… but truly, any bin will do! We’ve used sterlite bins, shoe boxes, and Amazon boxes in the past!)
2 Add in your coffee cups, lids, straws, sleeves, stoppers, pom poms and gems. Mix everything up and display it in a way that’s visually appealing! I find that having the cups standing up but without a lid is best!
3 Add your scoops to the bin!
4 Introduce the bin to your toddler! I find that it’s best to let your toddler free explore the bin first before trying a more focused activity. This tends to help them focus better when it comes time for an activity!
Skills to work on with this bin:
1 Counting: Order a coffee from your toddler with 3 scoops of coffee. Have them count the scoops. You could also ask your toddler to put 5 whipped creams (pom poms) on your coffee and let them count!
2 Prepositions: There is no need to formally teach your toddler prepositions. Introduce them thru play and watch your toddler learn! You could say things like “Is the scoop IN the cup or OUTSIDE of the cup?” or “Can you put the lid UNDER the cup while you scoop?”
3 Fine Motor: Let your toddler scoop beans into the cup then pour the beans from one cup to the other. Sensory bins are a great way for toddlers to explore scooping and pouring. Another fun fine motor challenge is to have your toddler try to scoop one pom pom at a time. It takes a lot of focus and is a great challenge!
4 Sorting: Show your toddler a kidney bean and talk about how it is big and brown. Then show your toddler a pinto bean and talk about how it is small and spotted. Have your toddler sort some beans between 2 lids!
5 Heavy vs Light: Fill one cup full of beans. Leave the other cup empty. Have your toddler pick up each cup to fill the difference between heavy and light.
