A week of Construction Activities for Preschoolers that they’ll actually love!

If you are planning a week of Construction activities for preschoolers then look no further. Here are our favorite activities we did during our Construction week. This has definitely been a favorite theme with the preschoolers.

Construction Crafts for Preschoolers

Mud Painting

Image shows a construction play activity for preschoolers where a preschooler uses toy construction vehicles to drive over a plastic bag with green paper and brown paint. Then the completed craft is shown with construction-themed stickers added.
Mud Painting is the perfect construction play activity for preschoolers.

This activity was definitely a favorite! I placed a piece of cardstock in a gallon sized ziploc bag and added some brown paint. The kids then took construction trucks and drove them through the mud. Putting the paper in the ziploc bag made this such an easy activity because there was zero mess!

The next day after the paint dried, we added some construction stickers to bring the craft together!

Name Building Cones

Image shows a construction craft for preschool with preschool hands glueing down orange cones with letters on them to spell the name NATALIE.
If you’re looking for a construction craft for preschool aged kids, this is it!

This craft turned out super cute! I let the kids spread chalk on their paper with their fingers then we built their names out of construction cones!

Some easy modifications we’ve used with name building crafts to meet your preschooler at their level are:

– Write each letter on the paper and let your preschooler glue the cones directly on the letter

– Write your toddler’s name on an index card for them to reference as they build their name

– Spell your preschooler’s name aloud to guide them in building their name

– Have your preschooler spell their name aloud first before they begin building their name

Construction Play Activities for Preschoolers

Construction Sensory Bin

Image shows a sensory bin with dried kidney beans and dried black beans. Kids are completing this preschool construction play with a cardboard box acting as a loader.
Construction Sensory Bin for Preschoolers

This sensory bin was SO MUCH FUN! Seriously, one of my favorite sensory bins yet! I build a loading station using a cardboard box and some paper towel tubes. I punched a hole in the paper towel tube and the box and tied a string to connect them, then used a piece of duct tape to hold the tube in the correct position for loading! The kids LOVED scooping the beans into the loading station to fill their dump trucks!

Base: Dried Black Beans, Kidney Beans, and Pinto Beans

Loading Station: Cardboard Box & Paper Towel Tubes

Fillers: Trucks and Road Signs from the Dollar Tree

Construction Play Dough Tray

Image shows a circular tray with divided sections. One with digger dough, one with stones, one with toy cars, one with playdough tools, and one with a roller.
Construction themed Playdough Tray

This digger dough is my FAVORITE…mostly because it’s made with coffee and smells amazing! The recipe for this dough can be found here along with my other sensory recipes!

I added some gems, beans, cutters, rollers, trucks, and road signs to complete the playdough tray. The kids’ favorite thing to do was roll little balls of dough to fill their dump trucks. Such a fun activity!

Shape Match

Image shows a paper with different shapes drawn on it and wooden blocks being matched to the shapes. This activity is the perfect addition to your Construction theme for preschoolers.
Complete your construction theme for preschoolers with this block matching activity!

This shape match activity is a great activity to have pre-setup as a morning activity or center activity. I traced different blocks onto a paper then copied the paper for each of my preschoolers. I dumped the blocks in the middle of the table and the kids worked on finding the right block to fit into the 2D shape on the paper. It was a fun spatial activity and the kids seemed to really enjoy it!

An easy way to modify this activity for younger preschoolers would be to use only cube blocks and match colors instead!

Dot Marker Activitiy

Image shows a picture of a mixer, dozer, and dump truck with dots on them. Preschoolers use dot markers to fill in the dots for this preschool construction activity.
If you need construction printables for preschool, this dot marker activity is just for you!

I’m sure you know by now that I love a good dot marker activity…so of course I had to include one in our construction week. My favorite part of these dot marker sheets was hearing the kids say “I want a dump truck” or “I want a cement truck”. It ended up being a fun way to practice construction vocabulary as well!

You can get these dot sticker activities here!

Little Painters

I set up some large paint brushes (like what you would use to paint windows) and a bucket of water outside. The preschoolers got to “join the construction crew” and help paint the fence with water! This activity was a HUGE hit and is perfect for some outdoor themed play!
